Travel the Silk Road – Part II
Background of the Silk Road and Marco Polo:
In the year 1295, a trio of bedraggled and road weary travelers rode into the city of Venice claiming to be the Polos, who had left the area 24 years before to go to China. As the Venetians scoffed in disbelief, the three men purportedly sponsored a banquet, and legend has it, tore off their ragged coats to reveal robes of silk, satin, velvet and brocade. This, all the while spilling a hidden fortune of gold and gems onto the tables. Here was proof, they said, that they not only went to China, but reaped its unimaginable riches.
